5 Job Search Tools Youre Not Using

5 Job Search Tools You're Not Using 710 What others already know, and you may be missing. This is a guest post by Bless Vaidian. If you’d also like to guest post here on JobMob, follow these guest post guidelines. Technology has changed the way we do things. It gives us options and the digital tools to do things faster and better. At a recent party I discovered that surprisingly many people did not know about the five web sites listed below. eval 1) Indeed Indeed has become one of the top sites used and referred by career counselors for finding opportunities in the United States. Indeed CEO and co-founder Paul Forster stated in an interview that, “Indeed includes jobs from over 1,000 sources â€" more than any other service on the Internet. Other advantages Indeed has compared with competitors include superior aggregation and search technologies.”eval If you are a job seeker I suggest that you download the Indeed mobile app (iPhone or Android) and even do a saved search. Those currently employed can use Indeed to read job descriptions and see if they have the skills employers are currently looking for. If not, acquire them now to make yourself marketable later. 2) Doodle Outside of work we often schedule events for organizations, clubs, and even group outings with friends. Using phone, texts, or email will take 2x longer than simply using Doodle’s survey system. Doodle polls everyone involved, and in one screen you can see what date/time has the best response rate. I use this for my SHRM and EACE meetings, and it makes planning so much easier. Job seekers can use the free ‘individual’ account. Try using Doodle to pick a date to get together with high school and college friends, or a even a group of LinkedIn connections to plan a networking social. Job leads follow those well connected and that make themselves visible. 3) Skype When networking and building your circle of connections, it’s always better to give individuals you want to meet options that fit their comfort levels and busy schedules. Never ask for just a face-to-face meeting. Instead also offer a brief phone or Skype session. Every resume, business card, and email signature should have a Skype address listed. Potential job candidates are now screened through the telephone or video appointments on platforms like Skype. You do not want to scramble at the last minute to try and create an account. Instead, create the basic free one now, and practice getting comfortable with its features. 4) Glassdoor At the National Governors Association Summer Meeting, American Vice President Joe Biden talked about Glassdoor. He attended the Data Jam event that was held with 24 high-tech firms discussing ideas on training and hiring job seekers. Biden stated how Glassdoor is helping individuals find jobs, and career counselors like myself agree. Researching a company you want to work for is an absolute must. Glassdoor gives you an insider’s perspective on what it was like to work or interview at your target company. It also provides relevant statistics and information to help you stand out in a crowd of job seekers that did not do their homework. 5) Spotify Music helps us manage time. It can motivate us and even take away job search stress. If you surround yourself with music, buy CDs and pay for iTunes, then check out Spotify. It’s free. This suburban girl and Ivy League grad gets pumped to tackle tough assignments by listening to ‘Seek and Destroy’ by Metallica. Whatever your music preference, Spotify will play a continuous stream of the artist you pick and similar artists in that genre. Unlike other sites, it lets you plays an entire CD, and even suggests matches based on the existing playlists in your computer. You can have several pre-set stations. This tool is great when sitting at home reviewing dozens of job postings, doing research, or sending emails. If Spotify isn't available in your country, try one of these. Which tools work for you? Tell me If there is a tool that you utilize and would like to share, drop me a note on one of our common social media platforms. In the words of former Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer: “The number one benefit of technology is that it empowers people to do what they want to do. It lets people be creative. It lets people be productive…and so in a sense it is all about potential.” About the Author Bless was one of the grand prize winners for the last three JobMob Blogging Contests. Making Use of Resume Writing Comics

Making Use of Resume Writing ComicsThere are many things you can do to impress a recruiter with your resume, but one thing you probably haven't considered is the use of resume writing comics. If you're looking for an innovative way to highlight your accomplishments and skills, this may be a good place to start. Resume writing comics can help illustrate your experience and skills in a way that will draw the reader's attention to them. With a little bit of imagination, you can use these comics to draw the reader in and interest them so they want to learn more about your story.Once you know what makes a resume stand out from the rest, it's time to focus on your unique resume. Many people begin with the basics when they're creating their resume, but this is a mistake. This requires people to simplify things so they can be understood, but this approach may not help you stand out.To get the best results, you need to draw attention to your experience and skills. Drawing attention to the mos t important features and emphasizing those specific points is an effective method for drawing attention to your resume. One way to do this is through the use of resume writing comics. What makes resumes unique is their impressive traits and accomplishments. These aren't highlighted in the same way other resumes are, but they are still something to showcase. You should choose the characteristics of your resume that you want to emphasize to make it easier for the reader to remember. Your strengths are the ones that you are the most proud of, so highlight those in your resume writing comics. The same can be said for your weaknesses. You need to emphasize the specific details of your experience so they don't seem as glaringly obvious. One example of this could be 'Lack of awards'Undergraduate degree.' Even if you had a bunch of awards, your resume writing comics should not focus on the awards themselves, but the specific accomplishments. When it comes to resume writing comics, it's importa nt to choose a target audience. Not everyone is going to have the same interests or requirements when it comes to resume writing comics. This means you need to think about what kind of comic you want to make so you can be sure you've chosen the right audience. If you want to appeal to a particular demographic, you'll want to make a different comic than someone else would.Social media can also help you create a more interesting resume. What would make a good comic about homecoming dates? If you happen to live in a large city, chances are you'll have an abundance of opportunities to meet and greet various individuals. On social media, you can connect with other students by chatting about all kinds of subjects. Whether you want to talk about movies, sports, or something else, there is always a topic you can discuss. It doesn't matter what you want to talk about because this medium can reach a wide range of people. If you want to learn more about how to draw these comics, you can find in structions on Google and YouTube.

5 Ways to Understand and Control Your Bad Habits

5 Ways to Understand and Control Your Bad Habits Habits run our lives. Our behaviour has a direct and profound effect on our attitude. Anyone can manage the good times and can cultivate the habits that promote well-being and success. However, every now and again, we gain bad habits that cause fatigue, depression, and create a significant barrier to success. When we act like the person we want to be, we eventually become that individual. Failure in the past to kill bad habits is no indication of future performance. Habits can be changed, but only if we understand how they work and gain a comprehension of the most effective ways to combat undesirable actions. Above all else, it’s important to remember that bad habits are hard to break, but they are even harder to live with. Below, you’ll find a comprehensive study of why habits form and how to break the cycle to achieve what you want. Explaining self-discipline and will power: Willpower and self-discipline ultimately determine the quality of life we lead. Luckily, willpower is a learnable skill. However, willpower alone is not a sufficient tool that will prevent us from engaging in the undesired behaviours. Whenever we plan a habit change, it’s easy to underestimate the level of desire or temptation we experience on a regular basis. The problem with trying to rely on mental strength alone: it will not teach you how to act when when you’re overwhelmed by stress or mental exhaustion. Your willpower is a muscle and as the day goes on, you become more and more prone to going back to your old habits. Ego depletion refers to the idea that self-control and willpower draw upon a limited pool of mental resources that can be used up. When the energy for mental activity is low, self-control is typically impaired, which would be considered a state of ego depletion. 5 simple tips to begin behaviour and habit transformation: Understand and identify the motivations for why you’re engaging in the undesirable habit. Be honest with yourself. The more information you have about a habit, the easier it is to eliminate. Below are 5 exercises that should assist with furthering your knowledge and aiding in habit transformation. Create small wins. The most efficient way to make a permanent change is to focus on daily, incremental improvements. Your aim is to wean yourself from the habit by setting target goals that consistently decrease the amount of time you spend doing the undesirable habit. Take digital sabbaticals.  Completely disconnect from the internet. Do so for a chunk of hours at a time. Write down the reasons you want to make a change.  Know why you want to make the change and what result you expect from this experience. Know the feelings, actions and situations that trigger the undesirable habits.  Is it nervousness, excitement, boredom, depression or another feeling that initiates the need to engage in the habit? Once you know, you can systematically save up your will power for when that feeling approaches. Commit to one habit change at a time.  It’s almost impossible to make multiple changes at once. Most individuals don’t have the willpower to manage multiple new routines. Depending on what source you believe, cementing a new habit can take as long as 2 months or as short as 3 weeks. In the end: Over 40% of what you do on a daily basis is habitual. We perform every action for a specific reason. Habits emerge because the brain is constantly looking for ways to save effort. When a habit emerges, the brain stops fully participating in decision making. However, that can all be changed, it simply takes time, self-knowledge, belief and consistency.

Be Careful What You Call Yourself - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Be Careful What You Call Yourself - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career There’s a local tavern in West Los Angeles named Mom’s Bar. Given that we have an extraordinary gastropub in town named Father’s Office, Mom’s fits in as part of the cool, local scene. You can raise a few after work, or pop in later when the trendier crowd arrives and creates a hip club scene. Mom’s Bar. Sounds like a nice place. It was. Last weekend, a co-worker went there with his wife. They are typical locals having a drink at 7:30 PM. Low key and relaxed, they happen to be on the quiet side, very courteous and polite. At work, he’s the guy who pops into my office only when he’s got something interesting to say. From time to time, he snaps a photo of my dog doing something silly, and sends it like a little gift into my email inbox. I always seek him out when I need good advice on a whole host of issues, technology, vendor management, and purchasing particularly. He also steps up when my business partner is off, taking on the questions and requests from staff, vendors and clients that I can’t handle on my own. He’s also an inventor, so he’s on top of all kinds of trends. He’s solved a particularly miserable health problem of mine with a recipe he cooked up. So why would such a great guy with a terrific wife stop in for one drink after work, and get tossed out of Mom’s Bar? He happens to have a congenital eye condition. Light causes searing pain if he doesn’t wear dark lenses. He wears them all the time. We’ve never had a client or anyone else even mention it at work, at home when we entertain a group for parties, or even when we were working with the The New Girl’s producers, who used our location for a shoot. It’s clear that he’s not trying to be cool by wearing shades indoors. It’s clear he’s rather heroically managing a major medical problem, very gracefully. Apparently, you can’t have a disability and get served at Mom’s Bar. Not even after a polite explanation by a very articulate couple, who were just quietly going about their lives. There’s an epidemic of this kind of stupidity, not just among small businesses that make the mistake of treating local customers badly. Think about the service you get at Staples, Best Buy, and Bed, Bath and Beyond. If I depended on the staff at Staples to help me really stock up on the staples I need for work, I would risk owning the worst possible printer, phones that don’t function and “sale” items that aren’t on sale. Oh! I did risk that. And got attitude just for shopping there. Best Buy is pretty much the worst buy possible. There’s a lot manufacturers’ field reps milling around in the aisles talking down the competition, but rarely any store staff or any inventory. And Bed, Bath and Beyond is almost beyond imagination. The last time I went the check-out clerk asked if I had any coupons. I did not. She moaned, “Wow, that’s too bad because this is going to really cost a lot.” It did. I didn’t realize that we’re paying a 20% surcharge by not having coupons (which brings down items to regular price). Way to make me feel stupid for shopping at your store! So Mom’s isn’t alone. Retail, restaurants and just about anywhere you buy anything seem to have lowered the bar on courtesy, common sense and customer service. The fix? How about writing a mission statement that embraces good business practices â€" and reading that aloud everyday? Or how about re-naming your business for what you actually do provide? Some come to mind. Might Still Be Fresh Raw Seafood Bar (got sick last Saturday night in Beverly Hills) We Have a Whole Lot of Electronic Junk (Chain store pushing old tech in its ads) You’ll Stand in Line and Get a Really Messy Dressing Room (Shopping mall retailers) What is the lesson that personal brands can take away? All you have is your name. Make sure when it comes to our minds, you’ve done what it takes to make us smile, remember what you do well and look for ways to help you get where you want to go. Thats what your name means when you are a really well managed brand with your audience uppermost in your mind. Author: Nance Rosen  is the author of  Speak Up! Succeed. Why every company should have a CHO (Chief Happiness Officer) - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

Why every company should have a CHO (Chief Happiness Officer) - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog This is my business card.?Does your workplace have a CHO? I think every company should have a CHO a Chief Happiness Officer. Heres why. The CHO title is modelled on all the other CXO titles. The CTO is in charge of technology, the CFO is responsible for the financials, the COO is head of operations, etc. And once?you realize that employee happiness may be?the most important success factor for a?business today, it becomes essential to have a Chief Happiness Officer, someone who is the main driver in making and keeping the workplace happy. I see more and more CHOs which is fantastic because this is one of the most important roles in the organization. They may not always be called Chief Happiness Officers it can be the HR manager, it can be the CEO, it can even be a regular employee. The important things is that?its a person who sees themselves as responsible for making and keeping the organization happy. Why do companies appoint CHOs??For one simple reason: Because they are realizing that happy workplaces make more money. Studies show that happy employees are more productive, more innovative, more motivated, more energetic and more optimistic. They are also less sick, stay with the company longer and make the customers more loyal. For those reasons (and many others) happy companies make more money. Also, companies are starting to see that there is an ethical dimension to running a workplace, and that a corporate culture that is toxic and stressful will slowly wear employees down and can ruin their careers, their health and their private lives. This is wrong and more and more leaders understand that a workplace should have a net-positive influence on employees lives. So what does a CHO do??The job is both inspirational and practical. First, this person should (of course) be happy him- or herself. It should be someone who can inspire happiness in others by their nature, and someone who is fun, likable and has a lot of energy. It should also be a person who genuinely cares about the well-being of people in the workplace. Secondly, the CHOs job is to spearhead different initiatives to make people happier in the workplace, like celebrations, trainings, events and similar activities in the workplace that help people do great work and see the purpose of what they do. The important thing is that the CHO has the support of top-level management. They may not require a huge budget but if the CEO?does not give a crap abut the employees, all the efforts of the CHO will be wasted. Or worse, they may come off as a a cynical attempt to keep people content in a toxic culture. Some people hate the very idea of a CHO they find it creepy and weird. And there are?absolutely some pitfalls. The role is not to be a corporate clown?or a happiness enforcer, constantly checking if everyones happy. That would be horrible. But having a great CHO,?a person somewhere in the organization who has the skills, the knowledge and the passion to help create a happy workplace and who has the unconditional support of top management makes perfect sense. It will not only make employees happier, it will also most likely make the company money. The big hoax - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

The big hoax - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Just as a concert orchestra isnt a race to the last note, life isnt a race to some exalted state called success. This is the point of a short talk by Alan Watts, which has been animated by Trey Parker and Matt Stone of South Park. This unlikely meeting of widely differing talents is an inspiration. You can see it here and there others to choose from here. Thanks for visiting my blog. If you're new here, you should check out this list of my 10 most popular articles.
